Learn about the environment at the National Solar Tour on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Solar House.
The National Solar Tour is an annual event hosted by the American Solar Energy Society. Solar-powered homes across the United States, including the UAB Solar House, host open houses and events.
The fair is free and open to all, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the UAB Solar House, 1637 11th Ave. South, Birmingham. Attendees are invited to tour and browse the Solar House and gardens. Local vendors, community organizations and live music will be featured.
Attendees can connect with Solar House representatives and learn about environmental stewardship and sustainability. With a variety of sustainable local small businesses, art vendors and nonprofits, attendees can connect with the community, receive resources and learn of volunteer opportunities in the community.
This is the second year the event will be a part of Fall Family Weekend, when students’ families are invited to visit the UAB campus, connect with campus representatives and attend community-focused events.
The UAB Solar House differs from other National Solar Tour sites by being a multipurpose demonstration home and living lab on a college campus. The Solar House models resilient technology, self-sufficiency and environmentally sustainable living by highlighting renewable energy, mindful and functional architecture, clean gardening practices, nature conservation, and waste reduction.
The university uses the space as a hub for meetings, retreats and group activities, including for college and K-12 instructors, teachers and group leaders who create educational programming and incorporate the Solar House into class curriculum. Learn more about the National Solar Tour here.
