New season of performances announced by UAB Department of Music

Highlights include pianists Nikolai Lugansky and Yeol Eum Son, the Department of Music PRISM concert, and “Chamber Music @ AEIVA.”

music prism windsymphony 4 joomlaA new season of musical performances has been announced for spring 2019 by the Department of Music in the University of Alabama at Birmingham College of Arts and Sciences.

Faculty and students in the department perform in UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center and in the Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. Many performances are free, and those that are ticketed help support the department’s programs.

The UAB Piano Series brings the world’s finest pianists to Birmingham. Distinguished Professor of Piano and Artist-in-Residence Yakov Kasman, a Van Cliburn medalist, directs the series. On Tuesday, Feb. 12, the UAB Piano Series will present Birmingham audience favorite Nikolai Lugansky. The third and final concert of the UAB Piano Series’ 2018-2019 season will be given by Yeol Eum Son on Tuesday, April 9. 

Continuing the Department of Music’s collaboration with Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts, “Chamber Music @ AEIVA” on Thursday, Feb. 21, will feature a concert in the gallery in conjunction with the exhibitions. The free Chamber Music @ AEIVA event includes a reception at 5 p.m., followed by a concert at 5:30 p.m., in UAB’s AEIVA, 1221 10th Ave. South.

UAB Chamber Trio recital, 7 p.m. UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. The UAB Chamber Trio will present a chamber recital of newly commissioned works. The trio is UAB Department of Music faculty members Denise Gainey, clarinet; James Zingara, trumpet; and Chris Steele, piano. The program will feature works composed for the UAB Chamber Trio by Valentin Bogdan, Benedikt Brydern, David Jason Snow and Andrew Wilson. Free.

Featuring the UAB Trumpet Symposium Gold and Silver honors ensembles along with the UAB Trumpet Ensemble, Brass Quintet and the Mass Ensemble. The UAB Trumpet Symposium is presented by the UAB Department of Music and hosted by Associate Professor James Zingara, DMA. UAB Piano Series presents Nikolai Lugansky, 7 p.m., UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall. Lugansky has performed for sold-out audiences at UAB and returns for another stunning performance for the UAB Piano Series. He is considered one of the world’s great interpreters of piano repertoire and receives high praise for his concerts, recitals and chamber music performances around the world. A UAB alumni percussion ensemble, Iron Giant is an emergent contemporary ensemble based in Birmingham featuring Sam Herman, Brett Huffman, Seth Noble and Justin Wallace. Established in 2011 to perform a collaborative piece with Sanspointe Dance Company, they subsequently presented three ambitious concerts in Alys Stephens Center’s Sirote Theater, each featuring some of the most influential and challenging percussion music from the 20th and 21st centuries. In addition to formal concerts, Iron Giant Percussion regularly participates in community and outreach programs through organizations such as Birmingham Art Music Alliance, Children’s Dance Foundation and Metropolitan Youth Orchestra's Scrollworks. Free.
