New virtual and drive-in arts events announced for fall

Alys2Three on a StringEnjoy fresh and fascinating entertainment this fall with a new exclusive Virtual Arts Pass, drive-in concerts and free events, just announced by arts organizations at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The programming is presented by UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center and Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts, with ArtPlay and UAB’s Institute for Arts in Medicine. It features something for everyone, from culinary conversations with chefs to classical and chamber music.

The Virtual Arts Pass offers exclusive access to artists, with performances — both online and at drive-in events — discussions and arts activities. VAP subscribers help support the arts at UAB and performing artists. Links to view the events via live stream will be emailed to VAP subscribers one hour prior to virtual events. Subscribe to the Virtual Arts Pass for $29 monthly; upgrade for an additional $20 and receive a monthly mystery gift box with products from local artisans plus supplies for workshop participation.

Virtual Arts Pass events this fall will include:

  • Alys3Kwame OnwuachiA Virtual Culinary Conversation starring chef Kwame Onwuachi with chef Chris Hastings on Sunday, Oct. 4. Hear from Onwuachi, one of Food & Wine Magazine’s 2019 Best New Chefs and 2019 James Beard Rising Star Chef of the Year, about his journey as a young black chef.
  • Virtual Inside the Arts featuring the creator and curator of PBS’ “The Art Assignment” Sarah Urist Green, Tuesday, Nov. 17. Green and AEIVA Director John Fields will discuss her career and the intersection of food and art, a topic she explores regularly in her PBS video series. Through her art cooking episodes, Green has delved into the eating and cooking lives of such artists as Georgia O’Keeffe, Salvador Dalí, Vincent Van Gogh and Andy Warhol, among many others.

Oct. 15, Virtual Chamber Music @ AEIVA, presented by the UAB College of Arts and SciencesDepartment of Music. Hear chamber music thoughtfully curated in response to artworks currently on display in the “A la carte” exhibition and performed by some of Alabama’s top musicians.

Oct. 27, “Our Culture’s Complicated Relationship with Food.” Join AEIVA for this panel discussion about our culture and food, featuring food industry professionals, scholars and artists.

Nov. 19, Spoken word inspired by the exhibition “A la carte.” Join Ashley M. Jones, Voice Porter, UAB associate professor of English and director of Creative Writing Adam Vines, MFA, and UAB students for special performances inspired by artworks in AEIVA’s “A la carte” exhibition.

Mental Health Mondays

Nov. 18, virtual Lunch and Learn: Medicinal Benefits of Spices. Following the theme of AEIVA’s “A la carte” exhibition, UAB Arts in Medicine will present physician and chef Dr. Luis Pineda. He is the founder of Cooking with Cancer, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of cancer patients through food.

ArtPlay

Once a month, ArtPlay gives families adventures in science and art with Vocabby’s World, a community vocabulary program, for ages birth to 5 years and their guardians. Each month, students learn new words and explore arts-integrated lessons with the help of the lovable Vocabby mascot.
