See performances in-person this fall from the UAB Department of Music

The College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music will present a full season of concerts with in-person audiences for the first time since March of 2020.

Per longstanding UAB protocol, members of the media must first receive approval from and/or be escorted by UAB University Relations to be on UAB property, including inside UAB buildings and outdoor campus property (e.g., Campus Green, parking decks).

Music performances by students, faculty and guest artists at the University of Alabama at Birmingham will be offered this fall, many of them free.

The Department of Music in the College of Arts and Sciences will present a full season of concerts with in-person audiences for the first time since March of 2020.

The UAB Piano Series will present Asiya Korepanova on Oct. 10. On Oct. 23, Prema Bhat, Indian classical vocalist and a 2021 UAB Jemison Visiting Professor in the Humanities, will present “A Journey of Indian Classical Ragas.” “Chamber Music @ AEIVA” on Oct. 28 will have the world premiere of four new compositions, inspired by the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts’ exhibit “Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration.”

Performances will be held in the Hulsey Center for the ArtsMary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall and UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center. UAB’s COVID-19 policies require mask-wearing indoors. Thursday, Oct. 7

UAB Department of Music presents James Zingara, trumpet, 7 p.m. in UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. Trumpet solo recital featuring works accompanied by piano, computer and other electronic media. Free admission.

Sunday, Oct. 10

UAB Department of Music Piano Series presents Asiya Korepanova, piano, performing the 24 Etudes of Franz Liszt, 4 p.m. in UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall. Tickets are $15, $5 for students through grade 12 and UAB employees; free to UAB students. 

Tuesday, Oct. 12

UAB Department of Music Wind Symphony and Symphony Band concert, 7 p.m. in UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Jemison Concert Hall. This concert will feature new and exciting music of the modern wind band repertoire. Directed by Sean Murray and Cara Morantz. Free admission.

UAB Department of Music Faculty Recital: Emily Jaworski-Koriath, mezzo-soprano, and Tad Koriath, piano, 1 p.m. in UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall. Free admission.

Friday, Oct. 22

UAB Department of Music Fall Choral Collage Concert, featuring the UAB Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and Gospel Choir, 7 p.m. in Southside Baptist Church, Birmingham. Directed by Brian Kittredge, Elizabeth Fisher and Reginald Jackson. Free admission.

Saturday, Oct. 23

Prema Bhat, Indian classical vocalist, with Avinash Ananth, mridangam, and Prasad Mantraratnam, violin, 7 p.m. in UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. Bhat is a Jemison Visiting Professor in the Humanities in the UAB Department of Music for fall semester 2021 and will present “An Introduction to the Music of South India” to students and a concert of Carnatic music of South India, “A Journey of Indian Classical Ragas.” Free admission.

Thursday, Oct. 28

Chamber Music @ AEIVA,” 6 p.m. in UAB’s Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts. “Chamber Music @ AEIVA” will present four world premiere compositions inspired by the AEIVA exhibit “Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration.” Written by regional composers from the Birmingham Art Music Alliance, these works feature combinations of violin, viola and piano and will be performed by members of the UAB Department of Music faculty and Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Curated by Laura Usiskin. Free admission.

Saturday, Oct. 30

UAB Department of Music Masterworks Festival performance, 7 p.m. in UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Jemison Concert Hall. This concert will feature Vivaldi’s masterwork “Gloria” performed by the UAB Concert Choir, UAB faculty-artists, professional orchestra and experienced local high school singers. With Brian Kittredge, conductor, Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk, soprano, and Emily Jaworski-Koriath, mezzo-soprano. Free admission.

Department of Music Fall Brass Ensembles Concert, 7 p.m. in UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. Directed by James Zingara. A concert featuring brass chamber groups from the UAB Department of Music, including Trumpet Ensembles I and II, Horn Choir, Trombone Choir, Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, and the Steel City Brass Quintet, directed by James Baker, Jay Evans and Tom Yan. Free admission.

Christmas at the Alys, 7 p.m. in UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Jemison Concert Hall. Featuring UAB choral ensembles and high school choirs from the Greater Birmingham area. Tickets are $8; free for UAB students and senior citizens.

Saturday, Dec. 11

Honor Band Festival Performance, 3 p.m. in UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Jemison Concert Hall. A three-day honor band festival featuring more than 400 top middle and high school students from throughout the state of Alabama divided into four concert bands. The festival concludes on Saturday at 3 p.m. with a free concert.

Safety is UAB’s priority. The pandemic is a fluid situation that UAB is monitoring, in consultation with infectious disease and public health experts; performances will be subject to change based on the latest COVID-19 safety guidelines. Event staff and attendees are required to wear masks indoors on campus regardless of vaccination status, as well as maintain proper distancing while on UAB’s campus, including at events.
