About Theatre UAB and Red Mountain Theatre

Since Red Mountain Theatre opened its new 60,000-square-foot Arts Campus in the city’s burgeoning Parkside District in 2021, opportunities for UAB theater students and faculty have boomed. Located just four blocks from the UAB campus, the new Red Mountain Theatre Arts Campus is an outstanding place for college students to learn, grow, connect and work. It also gives Theatre UAB faculty and staff professional opportunities to practice their craft in their own backyard. The relationship between the groups goes back to the days of the legendary Town and Gown Theatre and SummerFest; but their collaboration is bigger and better than ever before, and only getting stronger.

The UAB Department of Theatre has produced hundreds of full-length shows in its history, plus short films, student showcases and more than 100 original 10-minute plays. Theatre UAB student touring groups perform throughout the state, and its alumni work professionally all over the country. Theatre UAB’s plays are cast entirely from the student body, with very rare exceptions. In auditions, equal consideration is given to all students. Those who demonstrate exceptional ability are frequently allowed to design and even direct main-season productions.
