Learn about hip-hop culture and how it has shaped Black history at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s “Knowledge, Rhythm and Understanding: Hip Hop, Youth and Education,” on Thursday, Feb. 15, from 6-8 p.m. at ArtPlay’s Johnson House, presented by the African American Studies Program in the College of Arts and Sciences.
The two-part forum will feature a panel discussion of legendary hip-hop artists and practitioners who will discuss hip-hop’s influence on children and how it can be used for teaching and socialization. Panelists and artists include Akil the MC of Jurassic 5, Kool Kim of the UMC, Yo Aphro, Dj Supreme, Suaze, Dj Fx and Ishues. The event will be hosted by Shaheed Tawheed, rapper and educator, and Jeff Moore, Ph.D., credentialed course instructor of African American studies.
The second part of the event will include demonstrations and examples of beat-making, DJing, and break dancing.
The forum is co-sponsored by the UAB African American Studies Program, ArtPlay, and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
