UAB offers free English classes to interested learners starting in June

Free English classes will be available for the UAB community and interested learners this summer.

EnglishClassJoomlaCommunity English classes will be available free of charge for international students, scholars and staff at UAB — as well as for their family members and other language learners from the Greater Birmingham area — starting June 13.

Hosted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction, the English conversation classes serve as a lab school for the master’s program in teaching English as a second language. Classes are taught by graduate students being trained to become ESL teachers and also taught by community volunteers.

Registration takes place at the first class and throughout the semester. Based on a short oral test, new students — must be 18 or older — are placed in levels 1, 2, 3 or 4. The placement test will be administered Thursday, June 6, at 6 p.m.

Classes will be held Thursday evenings starting June 13 through Aug. 1 from 6-7:30 p.m. in Room 118 of the UAB Education Building, 901 13th St. South.

For additional information on placement test and enrollment, contact Dr. Josie Prado at jprado@uab.edu.
