GreenChem2The American Chemical Society student chapter at the University of Alabama at Birmingham has been selected to receive the Green Chemistry Student Chapter Award by its parent ACS organization. The UAB Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society was recognized for successfully completing green chemistry activities throughout the year.

SAACS works to educate individuals on how chemicals used in daily life and experiments can affect the environment. During the school year, the chapter focuses on hosting green chemistry centered events that stress the importance of understanding the harm that chemicals can cause to ourselves and the environment, what eco-friendly alternatives are available and what efforts are being made to make the environment greener. These events include green chemistry jeopardy, chemistry of egg dyeing, sustainability talk and the student involvement fair.

The chapter’s efforts on understanding and embracing of green chemistry principles led to their selection of this elusive award. The SAACS at UAB will be recognized at the 258th ACS National Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in March 2020.
