UAB medical student wins Alpha Omega Alpha award

Kathy Jo Carstarphen, a fourth-year medical student, has won a Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship award from the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society. Carstarphen will conduct an HIV education project with adult patients in a public hospital in Lima, Peru.

The Kuckein Fellowship consists of research support for a period of 8 to 10 weeks, 30 hours or more per week, for clinical investigation, basic laboratory research, epidemiology or social science/health services research. Only one candidate from a school may be nominated. The fellowship program honors Carolyn L. Kuckein, long-time administrator of Alpha Omega Alpha and an honorary member of the society, who died in 2004.
