UAB Women’s Tennis player and recent graduate Jennifer Cape, 21, has been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Women’s At-Large Second Team.
Cape becomes the first UAB Women’s Tennis player ever to earn Academic All-America honors and the first Blazer student-athlete to receive the recognition since women’s soccer player Danielle Blair in 2009.
“UAB is filled with hardworking and dedicated student-athletes just like myself, so I already felt lucky for the recognition I had received. I didn’t imagine being recognized on a national level like this. It’s a real honor,” Cape says.
Cape graduated from UAB in May, summa cum laude with departmental honors as a biology major and chemistry minor with a 4.0 GPA. She was a member of the Science and Technology Honors and Biology Honors programs. She did undergraduate research in the neuropathology lab of Kevin Roth, M.D. Cape was a UAB Dean’s List honoree in every semester.
Cape was named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team three years and the Capital One Academic All-District First Team twice, qualifying her for the Academic All-America voting. She was awarded the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal four years, 2008-11.
On the court, Cape finished the 2010-11 season with the best singles record on the UAB team at 24-12, including a 12-6 mark this spring in dual matches. She wrapped up her career with 67 career singles victories, including 39 in dual-match play, according to UAB Athletics. Cape’s selection marks the 17th time a UAB student-athlete has been named an Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
She is the daughter of Hope Cushman and David Cape. Her hometown is Oakville, Ontario, Canada.
