Elizabeth Simbeck, Mallick Hossain named Mr. and Ms. UAB 2011

Simbeck of Killen and Hossain of Gadsden will each receive $2,500 scholarships.

Elizabeth Simbeck of Killen and Mallick Hossain of Gadsden were named Mr. and Ms. UAB 2011 during the University of Alabama at Birmingham Homecoming game festivities Nov. 5, 2011, at Legion Field.

The winners of the Mr. and Ms. UAB competition each receive a $2,500 scholarship and will represent UAB. The award was increased by $1,000 this year. For the first time, the first alternates Noelle Cheeks of Jackson, Miss., and Andrew Vines of Hoover also will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

The Mr. and Ms. UAB Scholarship Competition is sponsored by the UAB National Alumni Society. The 30-year-old program recognizes outstanding students who have demonstrated scholastic achievement, leadership, campus and community involvement and overall enthusiasm for UAB.

Simbeck, a junior majoring in broadcast communications, is a recipient of the Golden Excellence Scholarship. She is a Trail Blazer, has a show on BlazeRadio, interns with the Rick and Bubba Show and volunteers with student leadership at Shades Mountain Baptist Church. She is the daughter of Damien and Regina Simbeck.

Hossain, a junior majoring in mathematics and philosophy, is a Goldwater Scholar, member of the 2011 National Ethics Bowl Championship team and plays with the Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra. He is the son of Sajjad and Monika Hossain.

Cheeks, a junior majoring in health-care management, is the daughter of Rosalyn Walters and Jeffrey Holiday. Vines, a junior majoring in accounting, is the son of Donny and Donna Vines.

  • Meghan McClain of New Martinsville, W. Va., junior, international studies major
