The Community Impact Grant is envisioned to support initiatives that have a lasting and measurable impact in the community. A committee will review applications and select the finalists. UAB employees will cast their vote for the recipient agency after presentations from three finalists. The first UAB Community Impact Grant was awarded to Magic City Harvest in December 2014.

The Community Impact Grant enables UAB employees to make a real and measurable difference to a challenging community issue. The grant will be awarded to one nonprofit or a coalition of nonprofits submitting a proposal that results in a deep and direct impact in one of three areas: education, health or economic security.

“The Community Impact Grant is a unique and engaging opportunity for UAB employees to make their voices heard and make a deep, lasting impact in our community,” UAB Benevolent Fund Program Manager Lisa Higginbotham said. “For local nonprofits the significant funding with this grant will allow them to dream big in regard to new programming and efforts to address the challenging community issues of childhood educational success, healthy and active lifestyles, and family economic security.”

Eligible applicants for the grant are private nonprofit organizations meeting the requirements of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and operating in the Greater Birmingham area. Any organization meeting these requirements may submit a brief proposal through Aug. 31. The grant proposal must address one or more of the following results:

  • Children achieve educational success.
  • People lead healthy, active lives.
  • Families are economically secure.

The grant award will be up to $50,000 and will be announced Dec.11. A minimum of 50 percent matching funds must be provided. Matching funds must consist of at least 25 percent cash match and up to 75 percent in-kind match to indicate that the proposal has a strong base of support and community buy-in. Organizations selected to submit full proposals must provide a copy of the most recent financial audit. Agencies without an audit should not apply for the Community Impact Grant.
