UAB band to raise money for Ireland trip with golf tourney

The Marching Blazers have been invited to perform '13 St. Patrick's Day Parade in Ireland. Now they need pay for the trip.

marching_bandThe mayor of Dublin, Ireland, has invited the UAB Marching Blazers to perform for the 2013 St. Patrick’s Day parade. As exciting as that is, the 200-member band won’t make it unless they raise some cash — and what better way than on the greens?

On Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, the Marching Blazers will host a golf tournament at Pine Tree Country Club in Irondale. The cost is $500 for a team of four, $1,000 for a team of four including hole sponsorship or $2,500 for a team of four including hole sponsorship and donor name placement on parade uniforms in Dublin. That includes a grilled lunch at 11 a.m., scoring, greens fee, cart and range balls. Cash beverages will be available throughout the day. The shotgun start will be at 8 a.m., and course contests will include closest to the pin and others. Prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place teams. Call the UAB Band Office at 205-975-2263. Visit the UAB Department of Music at www.uab.edu/cas/music.

The band’s official invitation to perform in Dublin notes that the group will have many performance opportunities in addition to the parade. “The week surrounding the 17th March is filled with activities and celebrations to honour our famous patron. There are parades and music festivals in towns and cities throughout the country,” writes Andrew Montague, who signed the letter as “Lord Mayor of Dublin.”
