UAB Theatre grad wins regional Kennedy Center playwriting award

A script written by UAB Department of Theatre graduate Stephen Webb is the winner of the David L. Shelton Full-Length Student Playwriting Award, given by the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, Region IV.

Webb’s play, “Postcards to J. Bird,” was given a staged reading at the regional festival, held Feb. 1-5, 2011, in Daytona Beach, Fla., and will be given a full production at next year’s regional festival. Theatre UAB selected the play for its next season, and as a result, the play will be eligible for consideration for the national festival at the Kennedy Center next year, said Kelly Allison, interim department chair.

Webb, of Madison, Ala., graduated in fall 2009.

A script by Theatre UAB student Daniel Martin, “Pink Lemonade,” was one of two winners selected in the festival’s short play award this past year, and the play was given a full production at this year’s festival. Martin, a senior graduating in May, is from Trinity, Ala.
