UAB Music announces fall season of free recitals and concerts, gospel and choral performance

The College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music presents many free student, faculty and guest performances, the UAB Piano Series featuring Rachel Kudo on Sept. 24, and Chamber Music @ AEIVA on Nov. 2.

Free recitals by talented students and world-renowned faculty and guest artists will be presented this fall by the University of Alabama at Birmingham College of Arts and SciencesDepartment of Music.

Faculty and students in the department perform in UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center and in Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. Most performances are free, and those that are ticketed help support the department’s programs.

More than 100 music majors and approximately 150 more students from many other majors, representing all undergraduate colleges and schools at UAB, perform in the department’s student ensembles, says Chair Patrick Evans, D.M. Ensembles include the UAB Concert Choir, Marching Blazers, Opera, Gospel Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Computer Music Ensemble and more.

UAB Faculty Recital by trumpeter James Zingara, 7 p.m., UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. The concert will feature trumpet performance solo without accompaniment, as well as accompaniments by piano, computer and chamber brass. Guest performers include Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk (soprano), James Baker (horn), Jeff Koonce (trombone), Steve Roberts (trumpet) and Chris Steele (piano). Pieces to be performed include traditional works by Eugene Bozza, Georg Philipp Telemann, Francis Poulenc and Gioachino Rossini, as well as newer compositions by Robert Bradshaw and Nichole Piunno. UAB Piano Series concert featuring Rachel Kudo, 4 p.m., UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall. A winner of the Gilmore Young Artist Award, Kudo gave her first performances with orchestra at age 16 in Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and De Falla’s “Nights in the Gardens of Spain” with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She has performed with the Warsaw Philharmonic in Poland and the RTE National Symphony Orchestra in Ireland, and appeared in recital at Chopin’s birthplace in Poland, Salle Cortot in Paris, Musikverein in Vienna, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Aspen Music Festival, Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series in Chicago, and Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York. Born in Washington, D.C., Kudo began studying piano at age 4 with Emilio del Rosario and continued at The Juilliard School and the Mannes College of Music.
