As inaugural director of the UAB Institute for Arts in Medicine, Kirklin develops and oversees programs to enhance the healing environment for patients and their families. AIM offers active and passive arts experiences by bringing live performance and visual art to the healthcare setting, and artists in residence to the bedside. AIM has served more than 26,000 patients, families and staff at UAB Hospital since its inception. She is currently working on a project teaching residents how to address sensitive medical health issues that adolescents and teens face, specifically suicide. She thinks through dangers and risks that children and teens face to find real world solutions. Dye provides medical perspective for parents as they tackle tough issues.

Kirklin led the effort to expand the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center’s reach into the healthcare community at UAB by starting partnerships with Children’s Hospital of Alabama and the Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders, and co-created the Arts in Medicine pilot program at UAB Hospital. The pilot program expanded in 2014 and is now UAB’s Institute for Arts in Medicine which is a partnership between the ASC and UAB Medicine.
