Murphy has been an entrepreneurship professor for the better part of two decades and is well-versed in entrepreneurship training, enhancing entrepreneurship education through outreach to entrepreneurial ventures and developing entrepreneurial ecosystems. His work has been cited in many major media outlets and he has published extensively in leading academic journals. He serves as Editor of the academic journal Management Decision. He wrote a scholarly book about actual mutinies during historic seafaring aventures facing radical uncertainty during the Age of Discovery, which was published by Yale University Press.

Murphy is a multi-award winning teacher and researcher. In 2016, AmericanInno named him to Chicago’s “50 on Fire” for his impact on the Chicago entrepreneurial ecosystem. In 2017, Future Founders selected him as the inaugural “Entrepreneurship Professor of the Year." He has professional experiences in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, New Zealand, and across Europe. Prior to academia, Murphy worked for a French multinational company and served in the United States Navy, where he was a certified harbor tugboat chief engineer as a teenager.
