Bowling wins new investigator award

C. Barrett Bowling, M.D., has received the Merck/American Geriatrics Society 2013 New Investigator Award

C. Barrett Bowling, M.D., assistant professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care, has received the Merck/American Geriatrics Society 2013 New Investigator Award. These awards are given to individuals whose original research, as presented in a submitted abstract, reflects new and relevant research in geriatrics. The awards are designed to recognize individuals who are committed to a career in aging research.

Bowling received an undergraduate degree in biology and a medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then completed an internal medicine residency and a clinical geriatrics fellowship at UAB and a Special Fellowship in Advanced Geriatrics at the Birmingham Veterans Administration Medical Center. He joined the faculty in the Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care and the Birmingham/Atlanta Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center in July 2012.

His research interests are related to the progression and complications of chronic kidney disease among older adults. Bowling will receive the award at the AGS Annual Meeting on May 4 in Grapevine, Texas.
