Yang receives grant for pediatric cancer research

Eddy S. Yang, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor in the UAB Department of Radiation Oncology has received a $250,000 grant from the Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research for research to ease the neurocognitive side-effects of cranial irradiation in people with leukemia, especially in children. Yang’s work targets DNA repair pathways to maximize tumor kill and minimize normal tissue toxicity. The goal is to develop a more personalized treatment strategy and improve patient quality of life.

Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research funds basic and clinical medical research in both conventional and integrative disciplines which focus on prevention, treatment and quality of life issues of leukemia, lymphoma and related cancers. It is one of the largest non-governmental sources of grant support to blood-cancer researchers at the nation’s leading institutions.
