Chen named editor-in-chief of American Journal of Surgery

Chen3Herb Chen, M.D.Herb Chen, M.D., surgeon-in-chief and chair of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Surgery, has been selected as the new editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Surgery.

The peer-reviewed journal, published by Elsevier publishing company, is designed for surgeons who perform abdominal, cancer, vascular, head and neck, breast, colorectal, and other forms of surgery. It is the official journal of seven major surgical societies.

“We believe Dr. Chen is the perfect choice to lead AJS and brings with him a new vision and fresh perspectives on academic surgery,” said Allan Ross, senior publisher at Elsevier.

After a brief transitional period of assistance from Kan Moore, AJS’ managing editor, Chen will begin as the editor-in-chief the first week of April.

Chen holds the Fay Fletcher Kerner Endowed Chair at UAB. He is affiliated with numerous associations and editorial boards, including The Society for Clinical Surgery, the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, Scientific American Surgery, The Oncologist and six other editorial boards. He is an associate and section editor for Annals of Surgery and a past president of the Association for Academic Surgery.
