Oster selected as American Statistical Association fellow

This award recognizes Robert Oster’s numerous statistical contributions to UAB faculty, staff and students.

Oster2Robert Oster, Ph.D.Robert Oster, Ph.D., professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Division of Preventive Medicine, has been named a fellow of the American Statistical Association, the nation’s pre-eminent professional statistical society.

To be recognized as an ASA fellow, each honoree must have made outstanding professional contributions to and have exhibited leadership in the field of statistical science.

Oster is recognized for his notable contributions to the health science research community in the field of statistics through diverse collaborations, for furthering statistics education in the health sciences, and for service and exceptional leadership to the ASA and other professional societies.

“This award is one of the highest achievements of my long career as a biostatistician,” Oster said. “It is one of the highest honors in the statistics profession, and is probably the most widely recognized honor.” 

The ASA is the world’s largest community of statisticians and the second-oldest continuously operating professional society in the United States, having been founded in 1839. The ASA promotes the practice and profession of statistics by supporting excellence in the development, application and dissemination of statistical science.

Oster is also a senior scientist with the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB.
