Gaspar, a political science major in the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s College of Arts and Sciences and vice president of the Spanish and Latino Student Association, earned an internship with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute for its 2021 summer program.

Gaspar, a native of Albertville, Alabama, is the first person from UAB to receive this honor. She also serves as lead assistant of Free Food For Thought, a program in UAB’s Student Affairs’ Multicultural and Diversity Programs.

The highly competitive internship gives up-and-coming Latino undergraduate students the opportunity to learn firsthand how the legislative system works while conducting research on issues such as education, health, foreign affairs, defense, science and technology.

Interns will also have opportunities to attend congressional hearings and policy briefings.
