Edie R. Hapner, Ph.D., the George W. Barber Jr. Foundation Endowed Professor of Otolaryngology, co-director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Voice Center, and director of the Division of Hearing and Speech, was awarded the prestigious American Laryngological Award during Combined Otolaryngology Spring Meetings in May 2022.

Hapner, an associate fellow of the ALA, champion of inter-professional care and mentor to nearly 20 laryngology fellows, is only the second speech-language pathologist to receive this award in its 35-year history.

“I am honored and humbled to receive this award and to be listed alongside some of the most inspiring and innovative laryngologists and scientists in the long history of the ALA,” Hapner said. “I share this award with my colleagues and partner laryngologists from Emory University, the University of Southern California and now the great UAB, who have guided and supported my incredible journey into the world of voice and upper airway.”

The ALA Award is a mark of recognition and esteem for outstanding achievement, either in medicine or in another discipline, which has contributed significantly to laryngology.
