Saag announced as keynote speaker for the spring 2023 UAB Office of Service Learning and Undergraduate Research Expo

UAB professor emeritus Michael Saag, M.D., will be the keynote speaker at the spring 2023 Service Learning and Undergraduate Research Expo.

Michael Saag, M.D., professor emeritus of medicine, microbiology and public health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has been announced as the keynote speaker for the spring 2023 in-person and virtual Service Learning and Undergraduate Research Expo.

Saag is a pioneer of modern infectious diseases research with more than 500 published articles in peer reviewed journals and numerous appearances and mentions with CNN, NBC, Wall Street Journal and more. 

In the 1980s, Saag proposed the concept for a comprehensive health clinic for patients with human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. As a result, the 1917 Clinic, the largest HIV health care unit in Alabama and one of the country’s renowned HIV clinics, was born. For the last 35 years, the clinic has treated more than 12,000 patients and has been dedicated to the mission of providing superior comprehensive patient care while conducting high-quality clinical trials and progressive life-changing research.

Saag is set to speak Thursday, April 20, in Bartow Arena at 9 a.m.

The expo seeks to highlight and celebrate excellence in research, creative activity and scholarship by showcasing the academic ventures of undergraduate students.
