Wajiha Mekki, a rising junior double-majoring in political science and cancer biology at University of Alabama at Birmingham, was recently accepted as a Johnson & Johnson intern for summer 2023.

Competitively selected after five rounds of interviews and out of hundreds of applicants, Mekki will work alongside the Janssen Pharmaceutical Company of Johnson & Johnson in the Medical Affairs department.

Concurrently seeking her master’s degree in public health, the 19-year-old says she is excited to represent UAB on a global level.

“Thanks to UAB, I felt prepared to dive into the deep end and take the chance to apply,” Mekki said. “Beyond giving me the educational background, UAB prepared me by mobilizing leadership opportunities that have helped me grow as a student and leader, which will hopefully help me excel in this role.”

The Lawrenceville, Georgia, native and UAB Honors College member says she is looking forward to trying something new and challenging herself with this opportunity, taking it as a day-by-day learning experience.

“I have not had many industry-related experiences in the past, so I am excited to learn from this internship and broaden my horizons,” Mekki said. “This internship is a testament to the enrichment UAB provides students, both academically and also experience-based as well. It is a reminder of my growth since becoming a Blazer and what is still left for me to learn.”
