Jennings nationally recognized for leadership as chief financial officer

Stream S JenningsUAB Health System’s CFO has been identified as key female leader in the health care space, among 181 others.   Susan Jennings, chief financial officer of the UAB Health System, has been recognized on Becker’s Hospital Review’s list of “Women hospital and health system CFOs to know, 2023.” On this list, she is among just 181 recognized female CFOs in the country.

“I am honored to be recognized among this group of women,” Jennings said. “I credit the support of Dawn Bulgarella and that of our board members in allowing me the opportunity to serve the Health System in this role.”

Jennings has over 35 years’ experience within the health care industry serving in a variety of roles focused on organizational financial health and strategic financial decision-making.

According to the Becker’s list, the number of women holding CFO positions at Fortune 500 and S&P 500 companies has nearly doubled over the past decade, with women making up 16 percent of CFOs in 2022. 

Her responsibilities include financial reporting and budgeting for the Health System and UAB Hospital, as well as overseeing any debt/financing initiatives across the enterprise. She joined UAB in 2006. Prior to being named interim CFO of the Health System, she had been CFO of UAB Hospital since November 2018. 

Prior to joining UAB, Jennings spent 21 years with Ascension Health in Birmingham, Alabama, serving in several financial roles that culminated as vice president of Seton Health Corporation.

She is a certified public accountant and was formerly with KPMG. She is a graduate of UAB and has completed the Momentum Executive Leadership Program. Jennings serves on the national Academic Medical Center CFO Council.
