David Geldmacher, M.D., neurologist and director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Division of Memory Disorders and Behavioral Neurology, has been appointed to an Alzheimer’s task force as the representative of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama.
This task force, established by a legislative resolution from the 2023 session, will develop recommendations for addressing a growing need for dementia care. The plan will also provide recommendations on increasing public awareness and building support for family caregivers, according to the resolution.
“I am honored to serve as the representative of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama on the Governor’s Task Force on Alzheimer’s disease that was re-established in October 2023,” Geldmacher said. “The task force will work to help fill a void in services for people with Alzheimer’s disease and their families in Alabama, where more than 100,000 people are affected by the illness.”
The goal of the task force is to develop and disseminate strategies, resources and guidance to better serve the population. Importantly, health care providers are specifically mentioned among the stakeholders in this process. Geldmacher said he plans to engage with the other members of the task force “to ensure that the voice of Alabama’s providers is heard and understood as we work toward viable solutions to the huge challenges ahead.”
