michael longmireUniversity of Alabama at Birmingham graduate Michael Longmire is spending four months working at the world’s largest chemical company as part of an internship granted to him by the German Academic Exchange Service, or DAAD.

DAAD’s RISE, or Research Internship in Science and Engineering, programs provide research and learning opportunities to students from around the world through partnerships with German universities and businesses. Longmire was one of approximately 65 students chosen for DAAD’s RISE-pro program, which is geared toward graduate students and young professionals with an interest in working in industry and engineering. Interns participate in research groups working at different companies throughout Germany.

Longmire’s internship is with BASF Global in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, where he works in the biocatalysis division focusing on using enzymes to produce fine chemicals that are used to create everyday items such as plastics, cosmetics and lubricants.

Longmire, also a Beckman Scholar, graduated from UAB in April with bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and biology. Following his internship, Longmire plans to apply to M.D./Ph.D. programs and eventually pursue a career in medical research.
