Hossain, Venkatesh earn Alpha Lambda Delta scholarships

Two UAB students were awarded two of the 23 national scholarships, given annually.

University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) students Mallick Hossain, a senior from Gadsden, and Raam Venkatesh, a senior from Augusta, Ga., were awarded two of the 23 national scholarships given annually by Alpha Lamba Delta (ALD).

Hossain, a 2011 Goldwater Scholar and Rhodes Scholar finalist, won the Mariah Leonard Award of $7,500. It is the top graduate fellowship ALD offers. He is UAB’s third Leonard Award winner in the last six years.

Hossain, a math and philosophy double major scheduled to graduate in May 2013, was a member of UAB’s national champion bioethics team and Mr. UAB 2011.

Venkatesh, a member of the UAB Early Medical School Acceptance Program and University Honors Program, was one of 14 national winners of the $3,000 Warner Moore Scholarship.

Venkatesh is a psychology major scheduled to graduate in May 2013.
