Endowed scholarship in medicine established

The scholarship will support African-American students who have demonstrated academic promise and financial need.
The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees approved the establishment of the Herschell Lee Hamilton, M.D., Endowed Scholarship in Medicine during its meeting June 14, 2013. The scholarship will support African-American students in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine who have demonstrated academic promise and financial need. Hamilton was the first board-certified African-American general surgeon in the area when he moved to Birmingham in 1958. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
