UAB biology major named to Teach for America post

Phillip Philon, a senior student in the University Honors Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and biology major in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been named a 2011 Teach for America corps member and will teach secondary science in a metro Atlanta middle or high school after he graduates in May.

Additionally, Philon has been selected as a 2011 Teach for America Amgen Fellow, which includes an additional cash award for Philon and additional annual funds to benefit his classroom and students; only 100 of the accepted corps members are named Amgen Fellows. Philon, a native of Silas, Ala., is the son of Randy and Delois Philon. In addition to his studies in the Department of Biology, Philon minors in chemistry and Spanish.
