Dr. Adele Fowler first joined the UAB Nutrition Research Center in 2013 as a pre-doctoral fellow, and then in June 2019 as a post-doctoral fellow. In April 2019, Adele completed her Ph.D. in Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham under Dr. Stephen Watts. Her dissertation work concentrated on the utilization of the zebrafish model system to predict the effects of dietary lipid consumption on human health. More specifically, she investigated the effects of dietary lipid composition on diet-induced obesity, including sex-specific differences in the allocation of dietary lipid. Additional research for her dissertation focused on the development of a standardized reference diet for use in the zebrafish research community and validation of quantitative magnetic resonance (QMR) to non-invasively measure fat mass in zebrafish. Adele’s postdoctoral research interests focus on identifying dietary, physiological, and genetic mechanisms associated with the development of type 2 diabetes in African Americans and Caucasians.
