Birmingham Corporate Challenge, an annual event that promotes fitness and healthy competition among area businesses and organizations, hosted 48 teams this year. Team UAB, a record 400 employees strong this year, placed second among 13 companies competing in Division 3.

For some employees, such as Holly Henning, the event helped kick their fitness goals into high gear. This was Henning’s first time to run a 5K, and the CAS academic advisor said she was nervous about it. She only recently started running after setting a goal for herself in January. “But everybody was really encouraging,” she said.

Patricia Lyons, a BMT transplant coordinator, said she signed up for the 5K because was trying to get back into running. The 66-year-old wound up competing in the jump rope competition, 1-mile walk and 10K bike stroll, even though, she said, “It’s been 20 years since I’ve been on a bike, and I haven’t jumped rope since high school.”

Lyons admits she may have gotten a push from her sister, who works for Protective Life and competed on its Corporate Challenge team. “There was probably a little competitiveness on my part,” she said.

Team UAB, which is coordinated by UAB Employee Wellness, racked up points in 10 events, taking first place in the jump rope contest, 10K bike stroll, 1-mile fun walk and the golf and cornhole competitions, plus a second-place finish in the 5K run and third-place finishes in the tug-of-war, basketball, climbing wall and dodgeball competitions.
