A new Workgroup F (Faculty) has been added. Workgroup assignments enable HR to tailor communications to each workgroup with information regarding how an announcement effects an individual.
UAB university and health system Human Resource departments are asking all faculty and staff to be familiar with important enhancements to the Workgroup Assignment System and know their workgroup assignment.

In 2018, faculty and staff were assigned to Workgroup A (Academic) or Workgroup C (Clinical) in a system developed to provide clarification about which policies and benefits apply to UAB employees relative to their academic/administrative/clinical affiliation. Feedback gathered since the launch indicated that HR communications could be further clarified with the addition of an all-faculty workgroup. As a result, a new Workgroup F (Faculty) has been added.

“The health system and university HR departments are committed to constant improvement,” said UAB Chief Human Resources Officer Alesia Jones. “Instituting the A and C workgroups was helpful, and we believe the addition of Workgroup F will further enhance our ability to communicate clearly with faculty and staff.”

Policies, processes and programs that differ for some employees/units include timing and scope of merit increases, eligibility for certain compensation programs such as the Sharing in Success gainsharing program, performance evaluation timelines and systems and engagement survey timing and eligibility.

Workgroup assignments enable HR to tailor communications to each workgroup with information regarding how an announcement effects an individual.

“UAB is a complex organization with diverse responsibilities among its 23,000 employees, so it is necessary that some policies, processes and programs apply differently to various entities and academic/administrative and clinical business lines,” said UAB Health System Executive Director of Human Resources Marty Box. “This complexity creates challenges for HR communications that can be confusing or unclear to some employees and units.”

Faculty and staff are assigned to one of three workgroups:

  • Workgroup A: All non-clinical School of Medicine staff; staff in all other UAB schools and the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as all UAB administrative departments and the Department of Athletics
  • Workgroup C: Staff (no faculty) in the School of Medicine who provide direct patient care or do clinical work as a regular part of their job; most staff in the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation; as well as all staff in the UAB Hospital and Hospital LLC, Health System and Callahan Eye Hospital
  • Workgroup F: Faculty positions across the institution (including faculty in the School of Medicine)
Check your workgroup designation at uab.edu/hr/wfgroup. Direct questions about your assignment to. CHRO@uab.edu or your HR contact.

Employees will soon be able to check their workgroup designation on the Human Resources website at uab.edu/hr/wfgroup. If someone believes they have been assigned to the incorrect workgroup, they should first discuss with their immediate supervisor. If additional assistance is needed, email CHRO@uab.edu or talk with their HR contact.

Jones and Box say it is important to remember that workgroup assignments (i.e., A, C or F) differ from weather group assignments (i.e., red, yellow or green). Weather groups are used only to provide guidance when parts of the institution close due to weather-related events. Workgroup assignments cover more areas. Information regarding weather groups can be found at uab.edu/emergency/weather, and workgroup information will be available at uab.edu/hr/wfgroup no later than July 1.
