Change your commute route Aug. 21, 24 for student move-in

As students begin arriving on campus for the fall semester, UAB Transportation recommends traveling an alternate route to work Aug. 21 and 24, when the highest number of students will be moving in to on-campus housing.

From 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 21 and 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 24, students will move in to CampBlazer and New Freshman Residence halls. Because of construction around the affected residence halls, commuters can expect congestion and traffic-flow changes, including temporary one-way streets. Move-in traffic will approach west campus from Interstate 65 and surrounding side streets will be monitored by UAB Police to prevent traffic from entering the move-in line from alternate locations.

Planning an alternate route is the best way to ensure your commute isn’t affected negatively by move-in days, says Brian Atkinson, program manager for transportation demand management. He recommends using traffic apps such as Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze, all available for iOS and Android devices, to monitor traffic congestion information during travel time.

UAB Transportation also recommends avoiding several general areas on campus where normal commuting routes will be affected by student move-in:
  • Eastbound lanes of University Boulevard between I-65 and 16th Street South
  • Southbound lanes of 13th and 16th streets between University Boulevard and 10th Avenue South
  • All lanes of Ninth Avenue South between 16th and 18th streets

Additionally, a number of roads are fully or partially closed due to campus construction:
  • All lanes of 17th Street South between Ninth and 10th avenues
  • One or more lanes of Ninth Avenue South between 17th and 18th streets
  • One northbound lane of 19th Street South between University Boulevard and Ninth Avenue
  • One westbound lane of University Boulevard between 19th and 20th streets south
  • One southbound lane of 19th Street South between Seventh Avenue and University Boulevard
  • Some lanes of 18th and 19th streets and Seventh Avenue South between Fourth and 10th Avenues

Blazer Express routes will not change during move-in days, but the South Green route may experience delays, Atkinson says. Monitor Blazer Express bus locations in real time on the Doublemap Bus Tracker app, available for iOS and Android, or a doublemap.uab.edu.
