Change your commute route Dec. 13, 14 for commencement

As another class of UAB students graduates, UAB Transportation recommends traveling an alternate route to and from work during commencement activities Dec. 13 and 14.

The Graduate School commencement is scheduled 6 p.m. Dec. 13 and undergraduate ceremonies will be 9:30 a.m. Dec. 14, both in Bartow Arena. Because of construction around campus, commuters can expect congestion and traffic-flow changes, including temporary one-way streets.

Planning an alternate route is the best way to ensure your commute is less affected by commencement, says Brian Atkinson, program manager for transportation demand management. He recommends using traffic maps such as Google MapsApple Maps or Waze, all available for iOS and Android devices, to monitor traffic congestion information during travel time.

UAB Transportation recommends avoiding several general areas on campus where normal commuting routes will be affected by commencement:

  • All lanes of 13th Street South between Sixth Avenue and University Boulevard

Additionally, a number of roads are fully or partially closed due to campus construction:

  • One or more lanes of Ninth Avenue South between 17th and 18th streets
  • 10th Avenue South between 14th and 17th streets
  • All lanes of 17th Street South between Ninth and 10th avenues

Blazer Express routes will not change during commencement days, but the North Green route may experience delays, Atkinson says. Monitor Blazer Express bus locations in real time on the Doublemap Bus Tracker app, available for iOS and Android, or at doublemap.uab.edu.
