New building-security measures expand to 4 more buildings

Written by

ONE cardUAB’s building-safety plan, which exerts greater control over access to campus facilities to enhance security, will expand to include four more buildings in October: Collat School of Business, School of Nursing plus Lister Hill and Sterne libraries. The three-phase roll-out, which began with the Shelby Research building in September, is expected to be complete by June 30, 2019.

With the security procedures, most buildings will be open to anyone with a legitimate purpose 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday- Friday and accessible by the UAB ONE Card after work hours and during weekends. Some buildings, such as Shelby Research Building and Lister Hill Library will require key card access at all times. An extensive set of FAQs are available online.

These upgrades advance the university’s policy and practice of enhancing safety, and Anthony Purcell, associate vice president for Public Safety and Chief of Police, asks community members not to thwart those measures, intentionally or otherwise.

“It is important, for safety reasons, that faculty, staff and students do not allow entrance into a building for someone they do not know should be there,” Purcell said. “It is equally important not to prop exterior doors open or use tape or cardboard to interfere with door-locking mechanisms. These measures are for your well-being and the safety of the campus community.”

Security measures will vary by the primary use for each building, though some will be shared by most:

  • Main entrances will have key card access, and cameras will be installed.
  • Exit doors will be suited with alarms and cameras that trigger if propped open.
  • Security cameras and a hard-wired lockdown button will be installed in every classroom for new construction and renovations; older classrooms will be phased in over time.
  • Any additional restrictions will be communicated to each building’s residents, and signs will be posted on each building that specify open and restricted access times as these changes become effective.

UAB’s ONE Card is provided to all faculty, staff and students as the university’s official identification. To replace a lost or damaged ONE Card, complete and submit the form online at uab.edu/onecard. Direct questions to onecard@uab.edu.
