The UAB School of Optometry is recruiting children for the DONUT (Delaying the Onset of Nearsightedness Until Treatment) Study. This study is being done to determine whether low-concentration atropine eye drops can delay the onset of nearsightedness (the inability to see clearly far away) in children who are likely to become nearsighted.

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Children ages 6–11 years
  • Children who are not yet nearsighted
  • Additional screening questions will be asked by phone or email

 

Compensation

  • $50 gift voucher for each study visit

 

Benefits

  • Free eye care during study participation
  • Glasses allowance and option for contact lenses if your child becomes nearsighted during the study

 

Visits

  • Six visits over a two-year period
  • Randomly assigned to use low-concentration atropine eye drops or placebo (a drop containing no medicine) nightly
