The UAB School of Optometry is recruiting children for the DONUT (Delaying the Onset of Nearsightedness Until Treatment) Study. This study is being done to determine whether low-concentration atropine eye drops can delay the onset of nearsightedness (the inability to see clearly far away) in children who are likely to become nearsighted.
Eligibility Criteria
- Children ages 6–11 years
- Children who are not yet nearsighted
- Additional screening questions will be asked by phone or email
Compensation
- $50 gift voucher for each study visit
Benefits
- Free eye care during study participation
- Glasses allowance and option for contact lenses if your child becomes nearsighted during the study
Visits
- Six visits over a two-year period
- Randomly assigned to use low-concentration atropine eye drops or placebo (a drop containing no medicine) nightly
