Explore the future of lab-made organs and printed tissues April 22

Written by

lab 2Anthony Atala, M.D., director, Wake Forest institute for Regenerative Medicine, will discuss "Current Concepts & Changing Trends in Regenerative Medicine” at 2 p.m. April 22 in MSCA.

Dr. Atala, whose work focuses on growing and regenerating tissues and organs, led the team that engineered the first lab-grown organ to be implanted into a human — a bladder — and is developing experimental fabrication technology that can "print" human tissue on demand.

In 2007, Atala and a team of Harvard University researchers demonstrated that stem cells can be harvested from the amniotic fluid of pregnant women. This and other breakthroughs in the development of smart bio-materials and tissue-fabrication technology promises to revolutionize the practice of medicine.

Atala has given two TED Talks on the subject of regenerative medicine — growing new organs and printing a human kidney.

The lecture is presented by the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science and UAB School of Medicine Department of Urology. Lunch is served on a first-come, first-served basis; seating is limited.
