The Developing Emerging Administrative Leaders program is a cohort-based learning experience that prepares promising staff members for future administrative posts. DEAL introduces employees to the essential components of administrative and management positions across UAB, including finance, research, human resources, education and clinical.
UAB and UAB Medicine employees who are interested in expanding their leadership knowledge, strengthening their professional network and gaining a broader understanding of how the institution operates are highly encouraged to apply. Applications for the 2027 cohort are open now through Sept. 22, 2026. (See details below.)
What DEAL offers
The 10-month DEAL program combines monthly in-person sessions with interactive learning experiences, case studies, discussions and hands-on projects. Participants also engage with senior administrators from across UAB and UAB Medicine, creating opportunities to learn from experienced leaders, exchange ideas and build meaningful professional connections. Additional resources, development planning and collaborative learning activities support participants throughout the program experience.
Program impact
The program’s impact can be seen in the variety of employees selected for recent cohorts. The 2026 class included staff members from the Collat School of Business, the Office of Research, the School of Nursing, the School of Public Health, the Heersink School of Medicine, Health System Information Services, Human Resources, Facilities, Academic Affairs, and numerous clinical and administrative units across UAB and UAB Medicine. (See the 2026 cohort here.)
Since its launch in 2022, DEAL has become a highly regarded professional development opportunity for employees across UAB. In 2025, UAB Learning and Development assumed leadership of the program, building on the strong foundation established by the DEAL leadership team and continuing its focus on preparing employees for the complex challenges and opportunities found in administrative leadership.
