funrun_webBring your families and strollers to walk, jog or run in the first Blazer Fun Run at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12.

UAB faculty, staff, students and their families can follow the two-mile course through UAB and Railroad Park before winding back to the Campus Green. The cost is $10 per person if you register before Oct. 14 and $20 afterward; kids age 12 and younger participate for free. Register online at www.uab.edu/wellness.

“This is a fun way to help faculty, staff and students continue to make strides toward good health,” says Lauren Whitt, Ph.D., coordinator of UAB’s Employee Wellness Program.”

Campus Recreation Center trainers will lead a pre-run six-week group-training program; it starts Oct. 3 and costs $35. Training will include pre-post height, weight, body-mass index and body-fat measurements. Educational sessions and nutritional seminars also will be provided.

Group training sessions will be at the following times and locations:

  • Monday/Wednesday: 12:15 p.m. in the gardens in front of the Women’s and Infants Center
  • Monday/Wednesday: 6 p.m. near the fountains in front of The Kirklin Clinic
  • Tuesday/Thursday: 6:30 a.m. in the Recreation Center
  • Tuesday/Thursday: 6 p.m. in the Recreation Center
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. on the Campus Green

If you are unable to participate in the group-training program but would like to train on your schedule, download a six-week training program to help you prepare at www.uab.edu/wellness.

On the day of the event there will be a finish line celebration on the Campus Green with the Sam Hunt Band, food, drinks, inflatable games and more.

During the Blazer Fun run, individual UAB programs and groups will deliver information on the services they can provide to employees, students and their families.

If you are part of the UAB community and have a resource, program or initiative to help employees, students and alumni, contact Whitt at 975-7775 or lwhitt@uab.edu. For as little as $500, you may help sponsor the event; you can have a table to meet personally with participants, and your information will be included in a new UAB Wellness Guide to be distributed the day of the event.

“This Blazer Fun Run event is a show-and-tell opportunity for all of UAB’s programs that have a message to deliver,” Whitt says.

“We want you to come and tell everyone about your health services, rehab programs or research study options at UAB. We want to know the opportunities that are available in the academic departments for employees to get involved or continue their education,” she says. “Learning is a significant factor in improving our overall health. We want to maximize as many UAB resources as we can so our employees, students, alumni and their families can live well.”
