The beginning of the fall semester always fills the calendar with events across UAB's campus. That is especially true this year, when UAB welcomed its largest-ever freshman class. Here, the photographers in UAB Marketing and Communications share their favorite images from August in this slideshow.
“One of the videographers on our team had his last chemo infusion at The Kirklin Clinic in August. We squeezed probably 20 of his closest friends and family into the tiny clinic hallway, where he rang the bell to signify the end of chemo treatment and a step into a new stage in his life. I love the emotion in this photo. This image holds layers and layers of love and joy, from Logan's huge smile, to loved ones clapping, to his mom smiling so big her eyes are closed. This moment reminded me how privileged I am, as a photographer and as a human being, to be able to witness and document such profound moments in others' lives.” — Andrea Mabry, senior university photographer
“NICU Bookworms is such a fun annual event. Each year a VIP comes to the UAB RNICU to get a book out of one of UAB's book vending machines, read to one of the adorable NICU babies, and support the Bookworms program. This year's VIP was Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin. This baby was so cute and so interested in him while he was reading.” — Ian Logue, university photographer
“I think I'm in good company when I say how happy I am that students are back! They add such a vibrancy to our environment and it never feels quite right without them. We anticipate their return and make sure we set aside time to photograph as much ‘student life’ as possible. I love someone with a unique look who's evidently living an authentic life. I asked this student if I could photograph her, because how could anyone with a camera in-hand pass her by? I like this photo because of the color palette, the subject's style and the blurred background with its geometric lines. “The new biomedical research and psychology building totally changes the landscape of University Boulevard, as you can see in this drone photo. After touring the interior of the building a few weeks ago, I'm so excited for all the incredible research that will take place here.”— Andrea Mabry, senior university photographer
The new facility will open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in October 2026.
“Our team was made aware of a need for images that were AI-inspired, but not created by AI. I have been layering images for about three decades. It is a technique I learned in college when our professor had us stack negatives together in a carrier to produce a creative image in the darkroom. When I reluctantly migrated to digital, I learned how to produce similar results in Photoshop. This photo is a composite created by layering three images together. I'm drawn to creative photography as much as I love a straightforward, simple approach. This image is a sort of marriage of the two. It began as a simple portrait. It was a beautiful representation of the subject before, but now I find it interesting on a different level. The longer you look at it, the more that's revealed. “In August, I attended a UAB Police and Public Safety training exercise in the Hill Student Center. In this case, the officers and other personnel were using a first person-style simulator where they completed objectives as a team and practiced decision-making in a realistic scenario.” — Ian Logue, university photographer

"Since the semester began, I've been collecting some new drone photos around campus. This view of University Hall shows the hustle and bustle of the Campus Green during class change. “This is my fourth fall at UAB. This one is special because my daughter is a freshman and, as a photographer in the Marketing and Communications department, I had the unique experience of getting to document the entire move-in process. I chose this photo because I think it's a good behind-the-scenes look at Move-in Day. I like seeing the dorm name, year and all the essentials in tow. There are also visual elements that get my attention, like the leading lines from the planks in the wall pointing toward the subject and the repetition of the diagonals also found in the outline of the cart. Notice the smile on her face, but with a little apprehension. Freshmen have never seemed as young as they do this year.” — Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer
