UAB Reporter News and Information for the UAB Community
People of UAB December 18, 2025

Each year, UAB’s official photographers capture tens of thousands of images as they document the incredible variety of events and personalities that make up our community. Here are some of our favorite photos from the past 12 months.

IML Jamie Smith

UAB employee Jamie Smith, Feb. 6, 2025

"This was easily my favorite portrait I took this year. I loved the drama in the contrast. This was shot in the Healing Garden in the UAB North Pavilion. The pyramid surrounded by greenery in the middle of the hospital is so visually interesting. My subject, Jamie Smith, did a great job of adding to the drama with her pose. The symmetry of this shot is so pleasing on the eye with different lines drawing the eye all over the image.” — Ian Logue, university photographer

AKM Campus Green with Dog

Campus Green, April 15, 2025.

“On one of the first warm(ish) days this spring, I stumbled upon these students and their dog, just taking a break and enjoying the Campus Green. Although I really love the energy and layering in this image, full disclosure: it's a favorite 100% because it reminds me of the afternoons I spent doing the same exact thing with my friends in college. Sometimes you just have to get outside and lay in the grass with your friends!" — Andrea Mabry, university photographer

JAT Sloss

Iron pour at Birmingham's Sloss Furnaces, April 23, 2025

“It feels like my theme is second chances for this year-end photo round-up. This is an image I really like from the Metal Fabrication & Casting Class's metal pour at Sloss Furnaces. What a cool thing to get to document! I love the movement in this one with the steam in the background and the subject's hair blowing around.” — Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer

IML Sprout

Street scene, May 8, 2025

“This photo has ended up on one of our monthly photo roundups before, but I couldn't help adding it in again here to celebrate the end of the year. Sometimes, the best photos you make aren't the ones you set out to get at a shoot. If you keep your head on a swivel, you can find interesting images anywhere. I was on a different shoot when I found this little sprout shooting out of a concrete grate on the street. My mind immediately went to the little plant in the movie “Wall-E.” Those random photos like this will often end up being my favorites!” — Ian Logue, university photographer

JAT Campus Green Students

Crossing the Campus Green, Aug. 25, 2025

“The first week of fall classes is always so much fun; having many students back on campus creates such positive energy. I love this image also because of the sunny day, and an especially moderate one temperature-wise, if memory serves correctly. I spent a couple of hours documenting students and really loved being outdoors. (It's not often that we can say that about an August day in Alabama!) And just look at our campus — isn't it wonderful that we have such lush green spaces in the middle of our bustling city?” — Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer

AKM Hill Center

Hill Student Center, Aug. 25, 2025.

“Sometimes, the best way to show off a beautiful but immobile thing is to create some movement around it. Here, I used a slow shutter speed to blur the person in the foreground as they walked by.” — Andrea Mabry, university photographer

AKM Gorrie Hall

Gorrie Hall, Sept. 17, 2025

“My favorite photos from this year are all found moments around campus. I love how the students pictured here are together but apart, studying in a communal area but in their own separate cubbies.” — Andrea Mabry, university photographer

IML Gurney Derby

Gurney Derby racers during Homecoming Week, Oct. 15, 2025.

“Gurney Derby is such a blast that it is imperative when photographing it that you capture the energy of the whole event. I had tons of fun photographing my first Gurney Derby and came away with tons of great photos. But I loved this one best. I loved how close I was able to get to the action. I love the expressions on all the participants' faces. You can see how much fun it is. I also think it's fun that I got another photographer in my shot getting even closer and a phone camera just behind it. I would love to see the shots they got!” — Ian Logue, university photographer

JAT Homecoming Parade

Homecoming Parade, Oct. 17, 2025.

“When choosing my favorite images from this year, it was logical to look through the ones I selected originally as favorites to share during our monthly recaps. This particular photograph was one that I really struggled over whether or not to post. I'm glad it has a second chance to be shared since I didn't choose it in October. It's such a lively capture of a paradegoer catching a t-shirt from a passing vehicle while a friend is cheering her on. Talk about being in the right place at the right time — for both of us!” — Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer
