Activity slows on campus during the summer months, but there is always plenty of action at UAB — even during a heat wave. The photographers in UAB Marketing and Communications selected these top picks from their June 2026 assignments.
“'Be Seen in Green' is the brainchild of the UAB Staff Council. The initiative encourages a little fun on Fridays, asking all staff, students and faculty to show their Blazer pride by wearing green. They also organize various service projects from book drives to weeding and sprucing up the gardens at UAB Solar House. I've been able to document several of these events. We met on a beautiful spring morning at the Solar House in early June. This is one of my favorite images of a volunteer gardener.” — Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer
“In June, UAB held a groundbreaking ceremony for renovations to Bartow Arena. No one there was more excited than Blaze. I love the composition of this image, with the shovels providing a foreground and the Bartow Arena sign behind Blaze's head. If I could change one thing, I would go more parallel to the arena so that the Bartow letters are centered, but I still love this photo.” — Ian Logue, university photographer
“One way UAB Police and Public Safety maintains a safe campus is a year‑round commitment to preparedness. I was asked to document their multi-week ALERRT Training drills. As a staff member of UAB and a parent of a soon-to-be UAB freshman, I appreciate their dedication to our community. What I find striking visually about this image is the repetition of the color blue, with the red accent on the dumpster balanced by the red shirt on the opposite side of the frame. I also like the police tape standing in as a sort of title banner for the scene; I think it helps frame the action.”— Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer
“For this image, I shot through the triangle cutout of the A in the big white UAB letters that can be found on campus. I used a low shutter speed to capture the motion blur of the student's stride. I think this makes for a fun and different view of a common sight: in this case, a student on the Campus Green. It helps that the flowers in the background provide such a bright pop of color!"— Ian Logue, university photographer
"Although in the summer I miss having thousands of students on campus, it is a really nice time to explore photo project ideas. I am currently working on one comparing empty and full spaces on campus. The "empty" images are being created now, and the "full" images will be taken in the fall when our campus is bustling with activity. I thought the comparison would be interesting. Of course there are still a few students here and there. I think seeing just one person in this image even better emphasizes the emptiness I wanted these images to communicate."— Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer
“When four members of the Compliance team came in for a group portrait, I decided to mimic the lighting and positioning from one of the group shots of the Artemis II astronauts. We ended up with a not-quite-as-moody aesthetic, but I enjoyed playing with this setup. Spoiler alert: They were very compliant when I gave them any directions. And also very fun!” — Andrea Mabry, senior university photographer
