Faculty Convocation is Sept. 12

honor seal STREAMPresident Ray Watts will deliver the State of the University Address and recognize faculty award winners 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 12 in UAB’s Hill Student Center. Faculty should RSVP to uabevents@uab.edu by Sept. 6.

During his presentation, Watts will highlight shared accomplishments of the past year and collaborative strategic planning for the future of UAB and Birmingham.

Among the honorees is Professor Joe Van Matre, Ph.D., recipient of the 2015 Ellen Gregg Ingalls/UAB National Alumni Society Award for Lifetime Achievement in Teaching. Van Matre, a professor in the Collat School of Business Department of Management, Information Systems and Quantitative Methods department, has taught at UAB for 45 years; he’s the longest-serving professor on campus at this time.

Alison Chapman, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of English, is the recipient of the Odessa Woolfolk Community Service Award, which recognizes faculty who have rendered outstanding service to the UAB community.

Eleven faculty selected to receive the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching also will be recognized:

  • Douglas Barrett, associate professor of graphic design, College of Arts & Sciences
  • Michelle Brown, Ph.D., assistant professor of clinical and diagnostic sciences, School of Health Professions
  • Dale Dickinson, Ph.D., assistant professor in environmental health sciences, School of Public Health, UAB Honors College
  • Nicolaas Geurs, DDS, chair of periodontology, School of Dentistry
  • Jack Howard, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Management, Information Systems and Quantitative Methods, School of Business
  • Jennifer Kilgo, Ed.D., professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, School of education
  • Lee Moradi, Ph.D., a professor of mechanical engineering, School of Engineering
  • David Resuehr, Ph.D, assistant professor, Joint Health Sciences
  •  D’Ann Somerall, DNP, assistant professor of nursing, School of Nursing
  • Mark Swanson, O.D., is a professor of optometry, School of Optometry 
  • Ashita Tolwani, M.D., professor of medicine, School of Medicine
