Bolton plans to retire from the university May 1 following more than 26 years of service to the institution in multiple stints. Mike Sloane, Ph.D., chair of the Faculty Senate, associate professor of psychology and director of the University Honors Program, says the senate created the award to honor both Bolton’s service and those who follow in his footsteps.

“Allen’s expertise and candor have benefited UAB tremendously. His calm demeanor and ability to explain complex issues in an accessible manner have greatly enhanced our understanding of UAB’s policies and procedures.”

“I am honored to receive this new award from the Faculty Senate, which has been a reliable and sincere source of feedback for me during my years at UAB,” Bolton said. “Working across campus in support of shared governance is especially important to the future of UAB, and I am excited that more administrators will be recognized for that work with this award.”

During his time at UAB, Bolton’s transparency and honesty when discussing topics such as budgets and facilities proved invaluable in discussions with the senate and other groups on campus, Sloane explains.

“Allen’s expertise and candor have benefited UAB tremendously,” Sloane said. “His calm demeanor and ability to explain complex issues in an accessible manner have greatly enhanced our understanding of UAB’s policies and procedures.”

Future iterations of the award will be given based on nominations from UAB faculty collected by the Faculty Senate; the award is intended to recognize a leader on campus whose responsibilities are primarily administrative.
