Whether its looming deadlines, long hours or a high-stress environment, work-related anxiety effects everyone from time to time. When workplace stress begins to overwhelm, UAB employees have a designated retreat where they can go to decompress and recharge.

The Code Blaze Quiet Room, now open in the UAB Employee Assistance & Counseling Center (EACC) office in Five Points, providess employees a calming space stocked with adult coloring books, iPads with meditation apps and other stress-management resources.

Job-related stress is a persistent problem for a large portion of the workforce, said center Director Tami Mayes Long.

“One-third of Americans report problems with chronic job-related stress,” Long said, citing the “2016 Work and Well-being Survey” by the American Psychological Association. “However, only 36 percent of employers offer stress-management resources.”

That’s not the case at UAB. The EACC provides counseling services, educational programs and online resources to help employees achieve a successful work/life integration — including managing stress at work. EACC’s Code Blaze program provides employees instant access to an extensive collection of online tools for managing stress, relaxation techniques and concierge services to ease outside demands.

“The Employee Assistance & Counseling Center would like to be the first place employees think about when seeking support for stress-management,” Long said.

The Code Blaze Quiet Room is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in the EACC office, located at 2112 11th Ave. South. Onsite parking is available. Another quiet room location, exclusively for RNICU nurses, opened in the UAB Women & Infants Center in 2017.
