The half-mile trail begins at the Education Building’s rear entrance and winds through the Mini Park before looping around Mervyn Sterne Library. Walkers can tack on another half-mile on the trail’s optional extension around the Campus Green.

School of Education Dean Autumn Tooms Cyprès, Ed.D., Rebecca Kennedy, Ph.D., assistant vice president for Student Health and Wellbeing, and student Lucas Riley, the School of Education senator for the UAB Undergraduate Student Government Association and president of the School of Education Student Ambassadors, will cut the ribbon for the new half-mile trail 9 a.m. Oct. 24 in the Mini Park.

“Health and wellness is a priority for the School of Education because our mission is centered on the intersections of teaching, learning, health and wellness,” Cyprès said. “We learn more and stretch our possibilities farther when we are in a healthy place both mentally and physically in the classroom.”

The new trail is one of seven indoor and outdoor walking routes on campus. UAB Employee Wellness Director Anna Threadcraft said the new walking trail can help students and employees relieve stress during busy days.

“We know exercise is important, but it’s often a challenge to incorporate it into our busy schedules,” Threadcraft said. “Creating an established walking trail around UAB, specifically for the School of Education, makes it even easier for employees to turn a working meeting into a walking meeting, or walk outside for a quick loop to shake off some stress.
