rep careerwise stickies 550pxSpring is a time for new beginnings, and UAB’s Career Wise program provides a great opportunity to revisit your plan or look at your options with fresh eyes. This five-part series from Organizational Learning & Development, which begins April 7, can help employees navigate UAB, clarify their career goals and objectives and build a support system.

"The program helps participants look at themselves, their developmental needs and UAB thoughtfully," said Learning and Development Specialist Amber Anderson. "The emphasis is on taking ownership of your career, and there is no time like spring to think anew."

Career Wise is targeted for those early in their career at UAB, but all staff are welcome. "Our participants have diverse backgrounds — early-career, mid-career and even late-career employees, some who have been at UAB for a good while and others newer to UAB," Anderson said. "We’ve had people say they wish they had done it earlier."

Career Wise participants find community through the program, Anderson says. "Co-mentoring groups form — people lift each other up and share ideas."

The courses build on each other, so participants sign up for the entire series. The initial session, Managing Your Career at UAB, (11 a.m. April 7) includes an overview of the organization of UAB and a career-management panel discussion. Other sessions:

April 21:

Self-Directed Career Planning

May 5:

Mentoring / Coaching webinar

May 19:

Building Your Support System

Between the April 21 and May 5 sessions, participants can take part in an optional, confidential goal-setting and action-planning session by phone.
