  • Who Needs to Disclose?

    • Investigators: - Anyone responsible for the design, conduct, or reporting of externally funded research and all non-exempt human subjects research at UAB.

    • Full-Time Faculty

    • Institutional Officials: - All employees with direct authority over allocation of institutional resources, assignments of graduate students, trainees, funding, space, salary, or promotions for faculty, including the University President; University Provost; University Vice Presidents; Deans; and Chairs.

  • How Often Must I Disclose?
    • Initially: For investigators, prior to being added as a responsible investigator on an existing research project or prior to being listed as a responsible investigator on a grant proposal. Full time faculty and institutional officials must disclose immediately upon employment.

    • Annually: Every 365 days after initial disclosure.

    • Within 30 days of discovering or acquiring a new financial interest or a change in an existing financial interest.
  • How do I Disclose?
    • Disclosures are submitted through myUABResearch. Instructions to disclose are available on the myUABResearch website.
  • What do I Disclose?
    • All financial interests must be disclosed, including income received from participation in external activities and all relevant intellectual property rights, including patent, copyright, license, and/or royalty information related to your institutional responsibilities must be disclosed.

    • Financial interests are anything of monetary value accepted or owned by an full-time faculty member, investigator, institutional official, his/her spouse, or his/her dependents, not held in an investment vehicle such as a mutual fund or retirement account in which the owner does not directly control investment decisions, whether or not the value is readily ascertainable. Examples include, but are not limited to:
    • remuneration for participation in external activities (e.g., salary, consulting and other fees, gifts, honoraria, etc.);
    • acquisition or ownership of (or an option to acquire or own) stock, shares, or other types of equity interests;
    • income arising from stock, shares and other types of equity interests;
    • income received from royalties (e.g., for sale by volume of products, textbooks, etc.);
    • income received from commercialization of intellectual property (e.g., for licenses, options, or other revenue generating activity); or
    • sponsored or reimbursed travel.
  • What are the training requirements?
    • All investigators responsible for the design, conduct, or reporting of externally funded research and all non-exempt human subjects research at UAB must complete initial FCOI training and refresher training every 4 years.

  • Who is considered Responsible Personnel?
    Who is considered Responsible Personnel?
    • A responsible person is defined as the PD/PI and any other person who is responsible for controlling the design, conduct, or reporting of research.

    • NOTE: Only include individuals who meet the definition of responsible.
  • How do I list Responsible Personnel on my project?
    • For sponsored projects, she Project Personnel page of the Proposal SmartForm must include all responsible personnel. Note that the Project Personnel page should only list individuals whose roles meet the definition of a responsible investigator.

    • For projects submitted to the HRPP, the IRB Personnel Form must include all responsible personnel. Responsible personnel on HRPP protocols are those who are assigned roles/responsibilities designated by an asterisk (*) and/or who have one or more of the 3 yes/no questions marked “Yes”.
